It’s common knowledge that organ donation saves thousands of lives every year in Canada. The medical community stresses the importance of signing up as a donor. So what’s the issue? Regulations state that although all Canadians have the right to become intended donors, some categories of people are excluded from consideration. One of these categories is males who have engaged in same sex intercourse in the preceding five years (MSM).
iCANdonate is a grassroots advocacy campaign working with partners in the medical and LGBTQ communities to seek legislative change in the area of organ donor eligibility and save Canadian lives.
Both the LGBTQ community and Canadian transplant patients are disadvantaged by the current discriminatory policies. Healthy organs and tissue should not be discounted based on the criteria of sexual orientation. By continuing to exclude potentially healthy and viable organs and tissues based on sexual orientation, Canada limits its opportunity to use viable organs from willing donors.
