Mx. Oxford Dictionary Definition

Mx. Oxford Dictionary Definition

The word Mx. will be included in the newest editions of the Oxford English Dictionary. Joining the new entries, alongside modern terms like pwnage, awesomesauce, cat cafe, microagression, rando, and other recent additions to the english lexicon, will be the title prefix or honorific, Mx.

The gender-neutral term Mx. is an alternative to Mr., Ms., Mrs., or Miss. Mx. is intended to reflect, “today’s more thoughtful conversations about gender identity.” Mx. could be especially useful in all manner of legal or official documents, such as in governmental and banking forms, in place of the traditional Mr. or Mrs.

Mx., which originated in the 1970’s, is a noun defined as, “a title used before a person’s surname or full name by those who wish to avoid specifying their gender or by those who prefer not to identify themselves as male or female.”

Could more gender-neutral language adaptations and additions be in the future? In Sweden, they adopted a third gender neutral pronoun in 2010. In addition to “han” (which means “he”) and “hon” (which means “she”), there is also the gender neutral, “hen,” which has become popular in media and schools. It can be used when the gender of a person is not known or when it is not desirable to specify them as either a “she” or “he.”
