Michael Sam

Michael Sam became the first openly gay man drafted to the NFL in 2014.

Sam came out of the closet publicly before he was drafted to the St. Louis Rams. And although Sam performed admirably in the 2014 preseason, the Rams cut the defensive end player before the official season began.

Next, Sam played for the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad, but that too proved to be a dead end. Taking a break from football, Sam took a spin as a contestant on the celebrity reality competition, “Dancing With The Stars” in 2015. Though he didn’t win, Sam showed off some memorable moves and shared more about his journey as an openly gay professional athlete.

Sam began the current football season suiting up with the “Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, but left the team in August, citing concerns with his mental health,” the New York Daily News reports.

Hopefully, Sam is at his optimum health now. Responding to a fan’s question on Twitter, Sam revealed he is eager to return to America’s National Football League and “give it one more shot.”
