Remember the art of pen meeting paper and mail correspondence?
It’s tough to recall the time before email and texts. But, with the United Nations’ new LGBT special edition stamps, it might be time to dust off your stationary!
The United Nations’ post office recently issued new stamps created by out artist Sergio Baradat. The stamps, which honor LGBTQI identity and seek to further acceptance, are a beautiful new part of the U.N.’s “Free & Equal” campaign, the Advocate.com reports.
The International stamps were introduced to the world last week at the U.N. General Assembly. The festive unveiling included a performance by the world famous New York Gay Men’s Chorus. Featuring two English, two German, and two French stamps in the set, the stamps are available online as well as at at the U.N. Headquarters stationed in New York, Vienna and Geneva.
The stamps are not meant to be merely ornamental. The United Nations hopes that they will spread tolerance and acceptance in places where LGBT populations are not afforded basic human rights. Sadly, homosexuality remains a crime in numerous countries.
Baradat created the artwork in hopes of ending that intolerance. “There are some countries in the world right now where not only are we not celebrated or respected, but we are beaten and killed,” Baradat said, “And I thought that it would be a wonderful opportunity using art, to use postage stamps as a vehicle – using art to change hearts and minds.”
